Insights
Mozambique's National Institute for Meteorology (INAM) has long sought a technical solution to strengthen the link between real-time observations at synoptic stations and the immediate use of observation data in the software ClimSoft.
Using Water in Sight's service, INAM's trained Meteorologists (Readers) at 13 of 15 synoptic stations take manual observations of rainfall and temperature, max and min, and send these online using WhatsApp on a daily basis.
Since May 2023, INAM has generated its sole source of digitized manual observations from stations reaching Mozambique's northern to southern provinces. Observations have been quality controlled to strengthen impact based forecasting.
Thereby, INAM has overcome the tiresome manual work of transcribing observations on paper sent by post, and the challenge with non-functioning automatic weather stations.
